Together with a bunch of people from the Overlander forum, we decided to take a walk to the Lower Portals and Upper Portals in Mt Barney national park for some pics.
Jeff has made these from info taken from his GPS.
The map of the two walks...
The elevation data of the two walks...
I Met up with John at Rathdowney on friday arvo and we found an old disused quarry to camp in so we could have a campfire.
The Moon was quite bright that night...
We had quite a nice view over the hills on Saturday morning from our campsite...
We arrived at the Lower Portals carpark and shortly after Jeff arrived followed soon after by Brett, with greeting all round we departed at 8.00 am taking about 2 hours for the four of us to make it to the end with lots of stops for pics and rest.
After walking all the way to the end of the track at Mt Barney creek we scrambled over the rocks upstream a bit to get this view...
We puffed and panted our way back to the carpark then drove up to Yellow Pinch Reserve to have our lunch and rest in the shade.
We had a guest for lunch although he went hungry this time...
With the shadows getting longer we headed back to the quarry so we could boil a billy and spent a pleasant night around the campfire...
Sunday morning saw a heavy mist in the valley below us as the sun came up...
a Panorama of the view...
We packed up camp and John headed for home while Jeff, Brett and I headed to the Upper Portals carpark to meet up with Jo, we made our preperations for the walk and Brett then headed for home leaving Jeff, Jo and myself to brave the rigours of the walk.
The walk down to the Valley floor was very steep and we were not looking forward to the return journey but the rest of the walk was reasonably flatish and came as a bit of a surprise.
when we arrived at Mt Barney creek we stopped for a rest and I rescued this litle caterpillar as it floated past...
Jo Spotted another track on the other side so we followed it down to the Upper Portals...
We then started the walk back finding it pretty easy until the climb started back up the steep bit...
Once at the top we were treated to a spectacular view...
We then drove down to the Mount May Reserve to have lunch in the shade and after checking out the nearby waterfall
headed for home for a well needed shower and well deserved rest.
Thanks Jo, Jeff, Brett and John for a great weekend :-)
